The best eco-friendly blanks for a clothing brand are made mostly from certified organic cotton or certified recycled fibers. They also come with a certificate you can show for the exact style you sell. Good places to start are the Stanley/Stella Creator 2.0, AS Colour's Staple Organic Tee, Econscious organic tees, and Bella+Canvas's recycled-organic 3001RCY.
Check organic claims against GOTS. Check recycled claims against GRS. A blank with "eco" in its catalog name isn't proof of anything.
Why does the proof matter so much? In the U.S., the FTC's Green Guides say plainly that "marketers should not make unqualified general environmental benefit claims."1 In the EU, new rules against vague green claims like "eco-friendly" have applied since September 27, 2026.2 In short, the shirt you pick decides what you're allowed to say about it.
Your customers care, and you want to get this right. This guide shows which sustainable blank t-shirts carry real evidence, what they cost per tee, and how to write listings that hold up. Once you've picked one, you can try Vaybel free and see your design on it the same day.
Key Takeaways
- Eco-friendly blanks are only as good as their paperwork. A GOTS "Organic" label means 95%+ certified organic fibers.3
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests a garment for harmful substances. It says nothing about organic or recycled content.4
- On Printful, the organic Stanley/Stella STTU169 lists at $13.95, against $11.92 for a standard Bella+Canvas 3001.56
- Vaybel's Supplier Directory lists 235 blank wholesalers. You can't filter them by sustainability, so ask each one for certificates.7
- Write the specific fact ("made with 100% organic cotton") instead of "eco-friendly." The FTC and the EU both treat vague green claims as a risk.12
What Makes a Blank Eco-Friendly (and What Doesn't)

A blank earns the "eco" label through three things. Most catalog pages only cover the first one.
- Fiber is the part shoppers see. Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Recycled polyester usually comes from plastic bottles, while modal and lyocell come from wood pulp.
- Processing matters as much as fiber. A shirt can be all organic cotton and still be dyed in a mill with poor water treatment.
- Verification protects your brand. A supplier saying "sustainable" is a marketing line. A certificate from an independent body, for a named product, is evidence.
No fiber is impact-free. As Printify's own eco guide puts it, "No t-shirt has zero environmental impact."8 That's why the stronger certifications follow the fiber through every step, not only the field.
So here's what doesn't make a blank eco-friendly on its own:
- A product name with "eco" in it
- A small share of recycled fiber in a mostly virgin blend
- A company-wide sustainability page that never names your style number
- A "made in" location by itself

The Certifications That Back Eco-Friendly Blanks
Four labels show up again and again on eco-friendly blanks. Each answers a different question.
| Certification | What it checks | What it doesn't check | Threshold to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) | Organic fiber content, plus processing, chemicals, wastewater and social criteria | Recycled content | "Organic" = 95%+ certified organic fibers; "Made with x% organic materials" = 70–94%3 |
| GRS (Global Recycled Standard) | Recycled content through the supply chain, plus chemical and social rules | Organic content | Covers products with at least 20% recycled material; GRS product claims need 50% or more9 |
| OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 | Finished garment tested for harmful substances4 | How the fiber was grown or whether it's recycled | Pass or fail by product class |
| Fair Wear | Labor conditions in member brands' factories | Fiber or chemistry | Membership and audits, not a fiber share |

The practical takeaway is simple. GOTS backs an organic claim, GRS backs a recycled claim, and OEKO-TEX backs a "tested for harmful substances" claim. None of them backs the word "eco-friendly" on its own.
Ask for proof. Specifically, ask the supplier for the certificate for the exact style you plan to sell, because a logo on a brand page isn't enough. For GOTS goods, the document that follows a specific shipment is called a transaction certificate.
Organic Cotton Blanks and Recycled Tees You Can Print on Demand
Most new clothing brands start on print-on-demand (POD) catalogs. So this shortlist sticks to organic cotton blank t-shirts and recycled tees you can order one at a time. Each fabric line comes from the brand's or provider's own listing.
| Blank | Fabric | Evidence to ask for | Listed on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stanley/Stella Creator 2.0 (STTU169) | 100% organic cotton8 | GOTS certificate for the style | Printful,5 Printify8 |
| AS Colour Staple Organic Tee (5001G) | 180 GSM, 100% combed organic cotton; marle colors 15% viscose10 | GOTS certificate for the style and color | Printify8 |
| Econscious EC1000 | 100% certified organic cotton, regular fit8 | Organic certificate for the style | Printify8 |
| Bella+Canvas 3001RCY | Most colors 55% organic cotton, 45% recycled polyester; Athletic Heather differs8 | Organic and recycled certificates | Printify8 |
| Bella+Canvas 3001ECO | Made from 100% recycled materials11 | Recycled-content certificate | Printful11 |
| Continental Clothing EP01 | 100% combed organic cotton; Fair Wear, PETA and GOTS certifications8 | Style-level GOTS certificate | Printify8 |
A few notes from the listings themselves:
- Stanley/Stella carries the most credentials here. Its site says it has made premium sustainable blanks since 2012 and uses "100% certified organic & recycled materials."12 It lists GOTS, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, Fair Wear and GRS on the same page (Stanley/Stella). Those are the company's own claims, so still ask for the style-level certificate.
- AS Colour says its organic range is "Global Organic Textile Standard certified." However, its 5001G spec also notes that marle colors contain 15% viscose.10 If you sell the grey marle, "100% organic cotton" isn't true for that variant.
- Bella+Canvas 3001RCY has the same trap. Printify warns that Athletic Heather uses a different blend, "so check the selected variant before publishing your listing."8
This trap is real. Say your listing reads "55% organic, 45% recycled"8 and a customer orders the heather. Your listing is now wrong for that order.

Bulk and Wholesale Options
Once you move from POD to buying inventory, the field opens up. Allmade, for example, uses recycled polyester, modal "made from renewable beech trees," and organic cotton. The company says each tee helps keep the equivalent of "up to 6 recycled plastic bottles" out of the ocean.13
Stanley/Stella also got easier to buy in the U.S. In December 2024, SanMar added the brand to its catalog with 20 styles made from organic cotton and recycled polyester for spring 2025, according to ASI Central.14
Emily Gigot, senior manager of sustainability at SanMar, called Stanley/Stella "a fantastic option for the most discerning of sustainability consumers."14
Need more wholesalers? Vaybel's Supplier Directory lists 6,479 suppliers in 102 countries, including 235 blank wholesalers.7 There's no sustainability filter, and that's telling. Eco credentials still have to be checked supplier by supplier, and there's no shortcut around asking.

What Eco-Friendly Blanks Cost You Per Tee
Sustainable blank t-shirts cost more. But not by much. Here are Printful's listed prices, checked on November 1, 2026:
| Blank on Printful | Listed price |
|---|---|
| Bella+Canvas 3001 (standard cotton) | $11.926 |
| Bella+Canvas 3001ECO (recycled) | $13.4711 |
| Stanley/Stella STTU169 (organic cotton) | $13.955 |

So the organic Stanley/Stella costs $2.03 more per tee than a standard Bella+Canvas 3001. The recycled 3001ECO costs $1.55 more.6115 To keep the same dollar margin, raise your retail price by the same amount.
Will shoppers pay it? Some evidence says yes.
McKinsey and NielsenIQ tracked five years of U.S. sales for 600,000 products in food, drink, personal care and household categories. Products with ESG-related claims grew 28% cumulatively over those five years, against 20% for products without them.15
Clothing wasn't in the study, so it's indirect evidence for a tee. The researchers also call it a correlation, not proof that the claims caused the sales.15 Treat it as a reason to test, not a guarantee.

How to Write Listings for Eco-Friendly Blanks Without Greenwashing

Most roundups skip this part. It's the part that can cost you.
The FTC's position is clear. Its Green Guides say "marketers should not make unqualified general environmental benefit claims" (16 CFR 260.4). The same section says a brand name like "Eco-friendly" is deceptive. It says "Eco-friendly: made with recycled materials" can work only if the whole product, apart from minor parts, really is recycled.1
Big retailers have paid for getting textile claims wrong. In April 2022, Kohl's agreed to pay $2.5 million and Walmart $3 million, $5.5 million in all (FTC).16 The FTC said they sold rayon products as "bamboo" and claimed eco-friendly processes.
A small brand won't face a penalty that size. Even so, a marketplace takedown or a customer complaint costs plenty.
If you sell into Europe, the bar is higher now. A new EU law against greenwashing has applied across the EU since September 27, 2026. The EU's own retail platform says terms like "eco-friendly" can't be used without recognized certification (EU Retail Platform).2
Here's how to turn that into listing copy:
| Instead of | Write |
|---|---|
| "Eco-friendly tee" | "Made with 100% organic cotton (GOTS certified)" |
| "Sustainable shirt" | "55% organic cotton, 45% recycled polyester" |
| "Green fashion" | "Printed on demand, so we don't hold unsold stock" |
| "Non-toxic" | "OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified," plus the certificate number your supplier gives you4 |
Only name a certification if you can show the certificate for that style. And if you use the GOTS logo itself, follow GOTS's labeling rules. The standard's owners explain how in this short video:
Once the facts are right, Vaybel's AI Listing Generator turns them into titles and descriptions for Etsy, TikTok Shop and Shopify. Give it the exact fiber content and certificate names, and leave vague adjectives out of the prompt. One thing to know: Vaybel doesn't print or ship. Your POD provider, like Printful or Printify, still makes and sends the shirt.
A Five-Step Process for Picking Your Eco-Friendly Blank
Use this checklist before you add any eco-friendly blank to your brand.
-
Decide which claim you want to make. Organic, recycled, or tested for harmful substances: that choice tells you which certificate you'll need, so make it before you browse a single catalog.
-
Shortlist blanks your POD provider actually stocks. Start with the table above.
-
Request the style-level certificate. Ask for GOTS or GRS paperwork for the exact style, because a brand-wide logo won't hold up if a marketplace or a customer questions your claim.
-
Check every color variant. Heathers and marles often use a different blend. Write your fiber line per variant, or drop the variants that break your claim.
-
Order a sample and price it. Feel the fabric, test your print, and set a price that covers the per-tee gap.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are eco-friendly blanks?
Eco-friendly blanks are plain garments made mostly from greener fibers, like certified organic cotton or recycled polyester. The strongest ones carry an independent certificate, like GOTS or GRS, for the specific style. A catalog label that only says "eco" isn't enough to back a claim.
Is organic cotton better than recycled polyester for blanks?
They solve different problems. Organic cotton skips synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, and it works well with DTG printing.
Recycled polyester reuses plastic waste and suits sublimation and athletic styles.
Pick the one that fits your print method, then get the matching certificate: GOTS for organic, GRS for recycled.
Can I call my shirts "eco-friendly" if I use organic blanks?
It's safer not to use the word on its own. The FTC warns against vague green claims. And the EU's rules on them have applied since September 27, 2026. Instead, state the specific fact, such as "made with 100% organic cotton," and keep the certificate on file.12
Does OEKO-TEX mean a shirt is organic?
No. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 means the finished garment passed tests for harmful substances.4 It doesn't certify organic or recycled content. To say "organic," you need a GOTS certificate or another organic standard for that style.
Choose Eco-Friendly Blanks You Can Back Up
Eco-friendly blanks work best when the claim and the proof line up. First, pick the claim: organic or recycled. Next, choose a blank with a style-level certificate for it. Then watch the color variants, since heathers and marles often change the blend.
On Printful, budget $1.55 to $2.03 more per tee, and price to keep your margin.6115 Above all, write the specific fact in your listing, not a vague green adjective. That keeps you on the right side of the FTC and the new EU rules. It also gives shoppers a reason to trust your brand.
