The best t-shirt fonts are bold, open-licensed typefaces with thick, even strokes: Anton, Bebas Neue, Oswald Bold, and Montserrat Black for statements, Alfa Slab One and Graduate for vintage, and Pacifico or Permanent Marker for script. All of them are Google Fonts, so you can sell shirts printed with them, logo included.1
Here's what most font lists skip. We measured the thinnest stroke of every Google Font that the top-ranking t-shirt font articles recommend. Great Vibes, a script one of those lists recommends, needs capital letters about 2.5 inches tall before its finest strokes meet the published embroidery minimum.23 Anton clears the same bar at about a quarter of an inch.
You already know to "pick something readable." It's right, and it isn't enough. A font can look perfect on a mockup and still stitch into a blur or come with a license that doesn't cover the shirt you sell.
This guide gives you 18 t-shirt fonts with a measured minimum size for each, the print-method rules, and what each license allows. AI-generated lettering faces the same rules, which is why our AI Design Generator checklist asks for lettering that stays clear at print size.4
Key Takeaways
- Heavy fonts such as Anton, Montserrat Black, and Alfa Slab One meet Printful's and Printify's embroidery minimums with capitals 0.25 to 0.27 inches tall; hairline scripts like Great Vibes and Pinyon Script need caps about 2.5 inches tall or more.235
- Weight matters more than the font family. Montserrat Regular needs 0.58-inch capitals for embroidery; Montserrat Black clears the 0.25-inch floor.2
- Google Fonts can be used commercially on shirts and in logos. A "free for personal use" font can't go on a shirt you sell.167
- Neither Printful nor Printify publishes a numeric minimum for DTG text. The common "1 pt line" rule is Printful's DTF guidance.8910
- Adobe Fonts, Creative Fabrica, and Envato all bar letting customers type their own text in the licensed font, so personalized-name shirts need an open-licensed font.111213

What Makes T-Shirt Fonts Work: Weight, Size, and License
Three things decide whether a font for t-shirt design survives the trip from screen to shirt. Only one of them is how it looks.
Stroke Weight Beats Font Family
A printer cares about the thinnest stroke in your artwork, not the font's name. Embroidery is the strictest case: Printful and Printify both set a minimum line thickness of 0.05 inches, about 1.27 mm, and a minimum text height of 0.25 inches.35
Stroke width scales with letter size, so every font has a smallest size that meets that line. We measured it. Montserrat Regular has a thinnest stroke of 2.2 mm at a 1-inch capital height, so it needs capitals about 0.58 inches tall to stitch cleanly. Montserrat Black clears the 0.25-inch floor easily.2
The fix for a thin font is often the same font, heavier. Printful agrees: if a font is too thin, "switch to a bolder version or add a thick outline/stroke."3
Size Against the Real Print Area
The mockup size isn't always the printed size. On a Bella+Canvas 3001 printed DTG by Printful, the front print area is 15 inches wide on sizes L and up. On XS to M it drops to 11.5 inches, and your design is scaled down by the same ratio.14
Type sized on an L prints about 23% smaller on a medium, and every stroke thins with it. Size for the smallest shirt you sell. Our t-shirt design size and placement chart has the widths for every spot on the shirt.
The License Is Part of the Spec
A font file on your computer isn't permission to sell shirts with it. We counted 100 unique fonts recommended across seven top-ranking font articles. 59 are Google Fonts. The other 41 need their license checked one by one.15 One list recommends Impact, Helvetica, Times New Roman, Georgia, Avenir, Futura, Brush Script, and Cooper Black, 8 of its 19 picks, and never mentions licensing.15 None is a Google Font, so your right to print them depends on where your copy came from.

The Best Fonts for T-Shirts, by Job
All 18 t-shirt fonts below are on Google Fonts, so the license question is settled.1 The last column is our measurement: the smallest capital height at which the font's thinnest stroke meets the 1.27 mm embroidery line minimum, rounded up to the 0.25-inch text floor where needed.23
| Font | Weight measured | Best for | Thinnest stroke at 1 in caps | Smallest caps for embroidery |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anton | Regular | Statements, condensed headlines | 4.66 mm | 0.27 in |
| Bebas Neue | Regular | Wordmarks, all-caps slogans | 3.56 mm | 0.36 in |
| Oswald | Bold | Long phrases that need to stay narrow | 4.01 mm | 0.32 in |
| Montserrat | Black | Clean brand names | 6.18 mm | 0.25 in |
| Poppins | Black | Friendly, rounded statements | 6.35 mm | 0.25 in |
| Bungee | Regular | Streetwear, signage looks | 6.43 mm | 0.25 in |
| Rubik Mono One | Regular | Wide, blocky streetwear | 6.69 mm | 0.25 in |
| Black Ops One | Regular | Stencil, military, tactical | 4.74 mm | 0.27 in |
| Alfa Slab One | Regular | Heavy vintage slab | 5.33 mm | 0.25 in |
| Graduate | Regular | Varsity and collegiate | 2.71 mm | 0.47 in |
| Ultra | Regular | Western, poster slab | 3.26 mm | 0.39 in |
| Shrikhand | Regular | Retro italic display | 3.47 mm | 0.37 in |
| Permanent Marker | Regular | Hand-drawn, casual | 4.40 mm | 0.29 in |
| Pacifico | Regular | Surf and retro script | 2.55 mm | 0.50 in |
| Lobster | Regular | Bold connected script | 1.71 mm | 0.74 in |
| Roboto Slab | Black | Workwear, sturdy serif | 4.40 mm | 0.29 in |
| Merriweather | Black | Readable serif for quotes | 2.54 mm | 0.50 in |
| Playfair Display | Regular or Black | Editorial, premium headlines only | 0.76 mm | 1.67 in 2 |
Bold Statement and Wordmark Fonts
Anton, Bebas Neue, and Oswald Bold are condensed, so you fit more letters across a chest print while keeping them tall. Anton and Bebas Neue each appear on three of the seven lists we checked.15 Montserrat Black and Poppins Black are wider and friendlier, a better fit for a short brand name than a long slogan.
Bebas Neue and Montserrat Bold are also on Printify's list of 21 "Embroidery-ready" fonts, which skip manual digitization. Other fonts go through a step that "can take up to 36 hours before production begins."17
Streetwear Fonts
Streetwear type runs loud and wide. Bungee reads like urban signage, Rubik Mono One gives you a blocky, wide-set mark, and Black Ops One brings a stencil edge. All three have thick, even strokes and clear the embroidery line minimum at about a quarter inch.2
Vintage, Varsity, and Athletic Fonts
Graduate is the free go-to for a collegiate look, and it's also on Printify's Embroidery-ready list.17 For vintage t-shirt fonts, Alfa Slab One and Ultra cover heavy slab serifs. Shrikhand gives you a retro italic that still has weight.
Script Fonts That Survive Printing
"Avoid script fonts" is common t-shirt advice. It's too broad. Pacifico and Permanent Marker have thick strokes and can be embroidered at half an inch or less. Lobster works from about three-quarters of an inch.2
The scripts to keep large are the hairline ones. Great Vibes needs about 2.49-inch capitals and Pinyon Script about 2.76 inches before their thinnest strokes reach the embroidery line minimum.23
Picture setting a brand name like "Juniper" in Great Vibes for a left-chest embroidered hoodie, where logos usually run about 4 inches wide.18 At the 2.49-inch cap height the stitching needs, the word is about 7.2 inches wide.2 It doesn't fit. Set in Pacifico at its 0.5-inch minimum, the same word is about 1.9 inches wide.2
Serif Fonts for Editorial and Premium Looks
Roboto Slab Black and Merriweather Black are the sturdiest serifs we measured.2 Playfair Display is on three of the seven lists, but treat it as a large-headline font. Its hairlines measured 0.76 mm at a 1-inch cap height in both the Regular and Black weights.215 Making it bolder thickens the main strokes, not the hairlines.

Font Minimums by Print Method
Check your t-shirt fonts against the method you'll actually use. Our DTG vs DTF guide covers choosing the method.
Embroidery
Embroidery has the clearest numbers: 0.25-inch text and 0.05-inch (1.27 mm) lines at both Printful and Printify.35 Printful adds that "letters below 0.1″ (≈2.54 mm) tall may be removed entirely during digitization" and that "very thin fonts and fine serif details tend to lose definition."3 Printify warns that "fine serifs and scripts may lose clarity once stitched."5
3D puff embroidery is stricter still. Printful says "calligraphy fonts or thin, complicated fonts won't work" for puff.19
DTF
Printful's DTF method (DTFlex) does publish numbers. Keep every line at least 1 pt thick, about 4 pixels at 300 DPI, and add a background color behind small text "to help prevent it from peeling off."9
Screen Printing
Screen printers don't publish a universal minimum either, because it depends on the mesh and the shop. Their advice runs the same direction. Bolt Printing's font guide tells customers to "avoid fine detail" and to watch out for overly thick fonts "which can make your shirt text blur together."20 Leave real gaps inside heavy letters, not just thick strokes.
DTG
Here's the part most guides get wrong. Neither Printful nor Printify publishes a numeric minimum for DTG text or line thickness. Printful only says that with DTG, "small text or details can appear blurry, lose sharpness, or fade into the fabric texture."8 Printify gives the same qualitative warning.10
The "1 pt minimum" quoted for DTG is Printful's DTF rule.9 It's a reasonable floor, not a DTG guarantee. The real test is a sample, so order one and check quality before launch.
Hoodie and Sweatshirt Fonts
Hoodies and sweatshirts are common embroidery blanks, and a left-chest logo is small. The best hoodie fonts for left-chest text are heavy ones that need capitals under 0.4 inches, like Anton (0.27), Montserrat Black (0.25), or Bebas Neue (0.36).23 For a printed hoodie, apply the same DTG caution as a tee and size for the smallest garment you sell.14

Can You Use This Font on a Shirt You Sell? T-Shirt Font Licensing
Font licensing decides whether you can sell the shirt at all. Here's what each common source actually allows.
Google Fonts: Yes, Including Logos
Google's FAQ is direct: "Yes, you can use them commercially, and even include them within a product that is sold commercially." It also says you can use them "within any logo" and "on any surface."1 The SIL Open Font License FAQ, which covers most Google Fonts, names t-shirts as an example of permitted use.21 The one thing you can't do is sell the font file itself.21
Even Google Sans, reserved for Google's own products until November 2025, is now under the Open Font License. Product Sans is still Google-only.1
"Free for Personal Use" Means Not on Shirts You Sell
Download sites say so in the fine print. FontSpace lists "Printing a T-shirt that you will be selling" as commercial use.6 1001 Fonts says that if a font has no license information, "commercial use is not allowed without prior written permission from the respective author."7 DaFont warns that the license shown on its site "is just an indication."22 Read the readme or the designer's site first.
Font License Comparison for Shirts You Sell
Subscription libraries each draw the line differently.
| Font source | Shirts you sell | Customers type their own text | If you cancel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Fonts (mostly SIL OFL) | Yes, including logos121 | Yes, the OFL allows bundling the font in design applications21 | n/a, no subscription |
| Adobe Fonts | Yes, with "no restrictions on the number of impressions or items"11 | No11 | Outlined or rasterized art keeps working11 |
| Creative Fabrica | Yes, as "flattened, static designs"12 | No, Creative Fabrica calls it "prohibited embedding"12 | Keep selling existing designs, but make no new ones for sale12 |
| Envato Elements | Yes13 | No customization apps13 | Designs made while subscribed keep their license13 |
| Canva | Printed resale allowed, but no Canva content "on a standalone basis" on on-demand t-shirts23 | No, Canva's fonts stay inside Canva designs23 | Check Canva's current terms |
| "Free for personal use" downloads | No67 | No | n/a |
Two details are easy to miss. Adobe doesn't let you send its font files to a printer, so send outlined artwork instead.11 And Canva's agreement has no separate rule for text-only designs, so read its standalone clause against your own design.23
Personalized-Name Shirts: The License Most Sellers Break
Personalized shirts, where the buyer types a name, are a different use. Adobe says its terms don't permit fonts to be used "where your customers select and apply fonts to their own text as part of the design," including on "physical products, such as T-shirts and coffee cups."11 Creative Fabrica and Envato draw the same line.1213
This isn't theoretical. In 2022, font designer Nicky Laatz sued the print-on-demand marketplace Zazzle, alleging it made her Blooming Elegant typefaces available to its designers, "many of whom used it on products for sale."24 Zazzle's position was that it held a license, reported as a $20 single-user license an engineer bought in 2017.24 Bloomberg Law reported the case was dismissed in April 2026 after the two sides settled.25 For personalization, use an open-licensed font. Printify asks you to confirm "I have the right to use this font for its intended purpose" before uploading a custom font.26
How to Pair T-Shirt Fonts: The 3-Font Rule
Most designs need two t-shirt fonts, three at most, with one job each: a heavy display font for the main word and a plain sans or serif for the supporting line.
Contrast weight, not just style. Bebas Neue over Montserrat Bold works because one is tall and condensed and the other is wide and steady. Pacifico over Oswald Bold works because the script carries the mood and the sans carries the words.
Be careful with delicate pairing fonts. Hairline display fonts like Wire One and Megrim look elegant in font pairing guides. They need about 1.9-inch and 1.2-inch capitals to meet the embroidery line minimum.2 Use them big, or not at all.
Setting Type for a Print-on-Demand Workflow
For a text-only shirt, set the type in a tool where you hold the font license, export a flattened PNG or outlined SVG, and check the thinnest stroke at print size.
With AI, describe the lettering in the prompt. Our guide to prompting for lettering in clothing designs has examples like "collegiate lettering." Then check spelling and stroke weight.
In Vaybel, the design step lets you upload an image or reuse your Brand DNA logo and place it on the garment.27 For type you've already set, bring it in as artwork, then add colorways, mockups, and listings. Vaybel won't replace a typesetting tool for pure-type shirts. It saves you redoing every step after the type is done.

T-Shirt Fonts FAQ
What are the best fonts for t-shirts?
These five cover most shirts, and all are Google Fonts you can sell on:12
- Anton: bold statements, embroiders from 0.27-inch caps
- Bebas Neue: all-caps wordmarks, from 0.36 inches
- Montserrat Black: brand names, from the 0.25-inch floor
- Alfa Slab One: vintage slab, from the 0.25-inch floor
- Pacifico: script, from 0.5 inches
What is the 3 font rule?
The 3-font rule is a design guideline: use no more than three typefaces in a single design. Most t-shirts work best with two, one display font for the main word and one simple font for supporting text. More fonts make a small print area look cluttered.
Are Google Fonts free for commercial use on t-shirts?
Yes. Google says its fonts can be used commercially, including in products that are sold, in logos, and on any surface.1 The SIL Open Font License FAQ names t-shirts as a permitted use.21 You can't sell the font file itself, and Product Sans remains restricted to Google.
What size should text be on a t-shirt?
For embroidery, Printful and Printify both require text at least 0.25 inches tall.35 Thin fonts need more. Our measurements put Lobster at 0.74 inches and Playfair Display at 1.67 inches.2 For DTG there's no published minimum, so order a sample before you launch.
What's the best font for a name on the back of a shirt?
A bold, condensed sans like Bebas Neue, Anton, or Oswald Bold, set in all caps. Condensed fonts let long names fit the upper back. If buyers type their own names, use an open-licensed font. Adobe Fonts doesn't permit customer-typed text on physical products.11
Pick the Font the Printer Can Hold
The best t-shirt fonts aren't the prettiest ones on a screen. They have strokes thick enough for your print method and a license that covers the shirt you sell. Bold Google Fonts like Anton, Montserrat Black, and Alfa Slab One clear the embroidery minimum at or near the 0.25-inch floor.2 Hairline scripts and high-contrast serifs need to stay large.
Your next steps: pick two fonts, one display and one plain, and check both in the table. Size your smallest text for your smallest shirt, and order one sample before you build a drop around it. If you're starting a clothing brand from scratch, set your brand typography once and reuse it on every product.

Vaybel measurement, October 24, 2026. We downloaded each font from Google Fonts, set "HAMBURGEFONSTIV hamburgefonstiv 0123" with a 1-inch capital height at 600 pixels per inch, and measured stroke widths along the center line of every glyph. The thinnest stroke is the 10th percentile of those widths, which excludes most tapered stroke ends. Minimum caps = 1.27 mm divided by the thinnest stroke at 1-inch caps, with a 0.25-inch floor. Script capitals are swash forms, so script figures are approximate. Word widths ("Juniper") were measured the same way.
